Description: Megalodon shark (Carcharocles megalodon) posterior tooth (lingual view). Jason Pardo has offered the identification of great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), proposing that it may be a rear or a mal-formed tooth. Folks at the Florida Museum of Natural History have proposed Carcharocles megalodon, also opining that it may be a rear or a mal-formed tooth. I have another specimen of a tooth virtually identical to this one. This suggests to me that the mal-formed theory holds less credibility than the "rear tooth" suggestion. We do find a great number of C. megalodon teeth in this location, but C. carcharias is certainly not out of the question. Bill Heim identifies this specimen as a posterior megalodon tooth, and I believe the weight of evidence supports his expert opinion.
